Marshmallow root
Althaea officinalis
Marshmallow protects and soothes the mucous membranes; it is used to counter excess stomach acid, peptic ulcers, gastritis, ulcerative colitis and in the treatment of coughs, bronchitis and respiratory catarrh.
Other Uses
The powdered Marshmallow roots were once used to make soft pastilles, these were the predecessors of the sweets ‘Marshmallows’ which no longer contain any of the herb.
